Baroque
- In opposition to the simplicity and harmony in the works of the Renaissance, in the Baroque period (17th century) we can observe and feel exuberance, exaggeration, stridency and a tension as if something is about to explode.
- Such tension is produced by counterpoints. Baroque is defined as a period of “irreconcilable contrasts.” Eternal fights between materialism and idealism, life and death, the worldly and the spiritual level, rationalism against exaltation of the senses.
- Every scene is often developed in detail, and it is definitely dramatic, always. Whether is it full of vitality and passion or it is an example of the darkest tenebrism. That is why it is said that Baroque is theatrical, stage designed.
- During the period the technique got to a point of excellence in representing figures with realism and movement.
- The most identified technique in this period is chiaroscuro. It can be appreciated in this painting. It is the evident contrast between light and shadow to mark and define volumes, but fundamentally to generate dramatic tension.
Representative artists: Caravaggio, Artemisia Gentileschi, Rembrandt, Velázquez, Rubens, Zurbarán, Vermeer.
