Vanitas, Still Life Full of Symbology

Six Paintings. One Concept

The Vanitas is still life that symbolizes the fleeting quality of life, how futile and insignificant earthly life is in contrast with spiritual life. That is why in the compositions we can see material things, things that represent fortune and power and things full of life and beauty. We can also see other things representing what is ephemeral and fragile, the withering, the extinguishing of the fire, death.

It is not strange that this genre had its peak during the Baroque (17th century), since the Baroque means drama and contrasts; and there is no more dramatic contrast that the meeting of life and death.
