Pontormo was an emblematic artist of Mannerism, transition style between Renaissance and Baroque.
Mannerism does not longer look for the represented scene to be as realistic as possible, but that the ingenuity and technical skill of the artist are highlighted, and that is why representations are exaggerated and with certain artificial, not very natural elegance. Postures, proportions and color are usually fanciful, forced.
We can recognize the work of this Mannerist stage of Pontormo, because of its brilliant and artificial colors.
