Guido di Pietro —called Fra Angelico after his death due to his religious devotion— was one of the protagonists of the Early Renaissance.

His life (1395-1455) encompassed the first part of the Quattrocento. It is interesting how elements of Gothic Art and the new obsessions of the Renaissance are mixed. There are elongated figures, a lot of gold and refinement: essential characteristics of Gothic. But beyond that, the great virtue of Fra Angelico is the expression he achieved in the faces of his figures, making them more “human,” more “real.” He was also concerned with perspective, and both issues are crucial for the "rebirth of the arts" (the recovery of the values of the Classical Antiquity) taking place in Florence.
