Diego Rivera and the Gannets

Six Paintings. One Concept

The gannet is a flower that recurrently appears in Diego Rivera’s work. And it is obviously not a coincidence.

The gannet is a symbol of Mexico, of its exuberant nature and of the most rooted popular culture. This flower is present in the markets, ceremonies, everyday life of the peasant, the native. Rivera, a committed artist, also looked for the reaffirmation of the cultural identity of his people.

But at the same time, this flower is the feminine sensuality. And we can see that clearly in the portrait of Natasha Gelman: there, the beautiful woman surrounded by gannets, is through the artist’s eyes a gannet too.
