Degas did not wish to be labelled as Impressionist —even when he showed almost all the characteristics of the group— and really he had neither the spirit nor the obsessions of the other artists of the movement.
Degas did not like painting outdoors or landscapes. His world was indoors, closed spaces, artificial light and the atmospheres it creates.
The artist, controversially, said that natural light was “too easy.”
