The swirling brushstroke is considered to be a very personal characteristic of Van Gogh’s work. But if we pay attention, we notice that he did not use it from the very start, but only at the end of his life. The swirling brushstroke appeared in the works that Vincent painted during his stay in the mental hospital of Saint-Rémy. He went there willingly, so he had a room and another one that was his studio, and he was allowed to paint in the surroundings.
Van Gogh spent a year in Saint-Rémy, and he lived only two months longer in Auvers. His life and creativity acquired a vertiginous rhythm, and the swirls appeared.
