If there is a fascinating city for a painter who loves light and the effects of the atmospheric conditions, is Venice. Venetian light bathes the exquisite buildings and also creates magical environments which reflect on the water of the channels and the lagoon.
Turner is the great painter of atmospheres. He said: “Atmosphere is my style.” And when we observe his sights of Venice, with its light and unique and changing reflections, that same Venice that amazed and challenged Impressionists, we are certain that he was a direct precedent of Impressionism.
